Acetylene production method

In the past, many bulk products that started with acetylene, such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and propylene cyanide, have gradually shifted to production methods using ethylene and propylene as raw materials, which has led to a gradual decline in the demand for acetylene. However, in order to make full use of the resource advantages of various regions, or due to the specific needs of organic synthesis processes, the production of acetylene (especially in areas rich in natural gas resources) is still valued.

Acetylene cracking reaction

Acetylene cracking is a strongly endothermic reaction, and the acetylene produced is very prone to decomposition and polymerization at high temperatures. Therefore, a large amount of reaction heat needs to be provided in a very short time. Commonly used heating methods include electric discharge in gas, high-temperature solid surface radiation heating and partial combustion of raw hydrocarbons. This has led to the classification of cracking methods, including electrolysis, regenerative furnace cracking and oxidative cracking. Among them, the oxidative cracking method can be divided into complete combustion method and partial oxidation cracking method.

In order to avoid the decomposition and polymerization of acetylene caused by the cracked gas staying at high temperature for too long, the high-temperature cracked gas should be quickly cooled to below 500°C. In industry, water quenching and oil quenching are two commonly used quenching methods.
